Shepton Mallet woman stole £2,000 while working as petrol station cashier at Morrisons in Wells

a woman who helped herself to more than £2,000 while working as a petrol station cashier has been given an eight week suspended prison sentence by magistrates.

Marie Karina Ashford pocketed cash from the till while serving customers at the Wells branch of Morrisons.
But when an internal investigation revealed what she had been doing she admitted the offence and was charged by police.

Ashford, 45, of Somerset Close in Shepton Mallet, pleaded guilty that between January 1 and July 13 this year at Morrisons she committed fraud in that she dishonestly made a false representation intending to make a gain of £2,364.21 for herself. "She had worked at the petrol station for two and a half years and got into financial trouble."
Defending solicitor Greg Peters said it was a very unfortunate case and one Ashford deeply regretted, and she had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.
"She admitted culpability from the start but took the money out of desperation as she was experiencing extreme financial difficulties and had felt backed into a corner," he said.
He said that the defendant had suffered extremely distressing personal circumstances with the loss of her partner and his father, and then his mother committed suicide.
"There was nobody left to fund her funeral costs so she took out a payment loan and found herself in dire financial difficulties

True, but some people just can't help it.
